Ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake from May 18

RANGAMATI, May 6 (BSS): Rangamati district administration has imposed a ban on fishing for indefinite period in the Kaptai Lake from May 18 midnight to ensure enhancing fish population in the lake.
The ban is enforced to protect mother fishes from the hands of fishermen to ensure safe breeding and boosting fish production in the lake.
The decision to impose the routine ban was taken at a meeting organised by the district administration.
District administration source said that about 8,178 tonnes of fishes of various species were extracted from the lake till April, 2015 since last year and BFDC earned revenue of Tk about 81.8 million (8.18 crore).
The government has arranged to provide foodgrain among 18,960 affected fishermen. It also proposed the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and Disaster Management to support 19,159 fishermen during the ban period.
About 23 tonnes of fish fries will be released in the lake during the ban period. Coast guard will be deployed at the vulnerable points of the lake to protect illegal fishing.
