FE REPORT | Tuesday, 20 September 2022
The government has relaxed the ban on foreign tours of its employees to some extent allowing them to travel for continuation of capacity-building-related activities.
The ministry of finance on Monday issued a notification to this regard and said from now on the government employees will be able to travel abroad for masters and PhD courses funded by the government under the operating and development budgets and also financed by development partners/universities/ scholarships and fellowships given by various countries.
Also, they will be able to travel abroad to participate in specialised/professional training programmes under the memorandum of understanding signed between the government and various foreign training institutions/universities funded under the operating and development budgets.
The government employees are also given the opportunity to travel abroad for foreign training funded by foreign governments/institutions and development partners.
Also the government officials having technical knowledge are allowed to travel abroad to check the quality of services/goods funded by the supplier/contractor and consultancy companies.
They will have to take prior approvals from the authorities concerned for the foreign travels.
The new order replaces a notification of May 12, 2022 which had ordered suspension of foreign tours of government employees as part of government's efforts to curb foreign currency spending amid quick depletion of forex reserve amid changed economic situation.
