Ban on hilsa export : To what effect ?

Sunday, 12 August 2007

Notwithstanding the exporting of the hilsa fish in the past, the same used to be also smuggled out for that was considered a more profitable venture avoiding all regulations and payment of duties to the authorities. The official volume of export was very probably a small one compared to the bigger quantities that went to India through smuggling operations.
With the smuggling operation remaining quite unaffected, the ban on export is, thus, not showing up any effect in the form of boosting its local supply that would create the ground for lowering its price locally. Therefore, the compulsion remains, as always, the immobilsation of the smuggling networks that facilitate its consumption abroad and not at home.
