Banana bonanza in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Nov 21: Farmers of various areas here have changed their fate by cultivating banana. Although banana cultivation was popular in Joypurhat and specially Vadsha, Jamalganj, Jamalpur, Kanupur, Panchbibi areas 6 to 7 years ago and by cultivating this item most of the farmers changed their financial solvency but for last 7 years the banana cultivation had been reduced because cultivation of other vegetable and crops gained popularity.
Firoj Hossain a young farmer of Jamalpur Puratan Bazar area under Sadar Upazila has made fortune by cultivating banana. He is known as a big vegetable grower of that area but now he is fully engaged in banana cultivation. For last 3 years he has been earning a lot of money from this item.
Firoj Hossain told FE that he has been cultivating 2 acres of land for 3 years and making good profit from it. He added that he used to cultivate others crops but since he could not make good profit began to cultivate banana making handsome profit. He said every year he earns 90 thousand Tk and above from per acre where the production cost was at 30 thousand Tk only. Besides its production is very simple and easy. The market price and demand for banana is also very good. He also noted that all types of banana cultivation is not profitable. He emphasised only on Sagor item though Manik or Sabri and Champa are being cultivated in this area but those are not as much profitable.
Firoj Hossain has made himself a model banana cultivator in this area. Most of the farmer come to him for suggestion for cultivation this item.
Joypurhat DAE office sources said every year 6 thousand acres of land is brought under banana cultivation and it is increasing day by day.
