FE Report | Tuesday, 17 June 2008
The country's telecom regulatory body has sharply reduced bandwidth charge of submarine cable network aiming to encourage use of Internet in the country.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Monday reduced the charge, saying it will help minimise the cost of Internet use.
BTRC said the government and the non-government schools, colleges, universities and madrasas, run under Monthly Payment Order (MPO) programme, will get bandwidth connection at 75 per cent lower rate.
It said the government, semi-government, autonomous bodies and call centres will get bandwidth connection at 20-60 per cent lower rate.
Apart from this, there is arrangement to help the government primary schools to provide bandwidth connection upto 64kbps at free of cost.
Chief of BTRC Maj Gen (retd) Manjurul Alam has called upon the country's Internet services providers to ensure benefit of the lower rate for the people.
