Monday, 27 January 2014
Bangladesh were all out for 232 in the first innings of their first cricket Test match against Sri Lanka at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Monday. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan were the only batsmen to restore some respectability to Bangladesh’s score. Mushfiqur contributed 61 while Shakib 55 as all other bats melted in the face of Sri Lanka’s fiery pace. The Lankan pacers Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal claimed four and three wickets respectively. Debutant Shamsur Rahman who came into the Test on the back of scoring 267 in a first-class match for Central Zone in the recent Bangladesh Cricket League was caught out on the 12th over. He scored 33 from 34 balls while co-opener Tamim Iqbal scored 6 off 28 balls, both out caught off Shaminda Eranga’s bowling. Marshall Ayub, who had a very short stay, was dismissed for 1 off 6 balls by Lankan skipper Angelo Matthews. Mominul was the fourth batsman to fall, as he offered a simple catch to Vithanage off Lakmal’s bowling. Mushfiqur and Shakib tried to rebuild Bangladesh’s innings before falling lbw to Lakmal and Herath respectively. Bangladesh made 232 thanks to a hard hitting by Sohag Gazi, who contributed 42, according to private TV channels.
