Bangladesh ahead of India: Amu

Bangladesh’s economy is doing better than neighbouring India, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu has claimed. He said employees in Bangladesh were not axed in the face of a global recession unlike in the US, world’s biggest economy. “We are known as a self-sufficient country in food production,” he said at a programme at the Dhaka University on Friday. He, however, did not present data to support his claims. “Our economy is more self-sufficient in comparison to India,” the Industries Minister said. The World Bank has projected India’s economy will grow over 6 percent in 2014-15 and 7.1 percent by 2016-17 as global demand recovers and domestic investment increases. Early this year, the bank said Bangladesh’s GDP growth would not cross 5.7 percent due to political uncertainties. Finance Minister AMA Muhith had, however, claimed the growth rate would not fall below 6.3 percent, according to bdnews24.com.
