Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe to take 2-1 lead
Sunday, 1 November 2009
Tigers made things look very easy when their bowlers and batsmen hit top form to stroll to take a 2-1 lead over Zimbabwe in the five-match one-day-international series as Bangladesh recorded an emphatic four-wicket win in the third ODI played at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in the city Saturday, reports BSS.
Bangladesh bowlers Nazmul Hossain with three for 13, Enamul Haque junior with three for 45 and Abdur Razzak with two for 41 reduce Zimbabwe to a paltry total of 197 all out in only 41.1 overs though local selectors drafted in one more specialist spinner opting for only one seamer.
When Tigers batted it was just a matter of time to see what would be the margin of victory as Bangladesh batters look in supreme touch. But as Bangladesh lost some unnecessary wickets things looked less embarrassing for Zimbabwe.
Southpaw opener Tamim Iqbal, who failed to impress in the first two match finally found his touch with a sparkling 80 as Bangladesh raced to 198 for six wickets in 40.4 overs to proceed to Chittagong on a cushion of 2-1 lead in the series.
Tamim later adjudged as man of the match, was looking good for a century there but a moment of madness saw him back in the dressing room stumped by Taylor off the bowling of Cremer.
Mohammad Ashraful followed Tamim with a superb 63 runs off 91 with seven boundaries and one sixer. Rokibul with 21 was the next best batsman. Zunaed Siddiqui, 4, Mushfiqur, 5, and Mahmudullah, 7, were the other tiger batsmen to be dismissed. Shakib with 5 and Naeem with 4 were the two not out batsmen at the crease Bangladesh reached their target.
Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib-al-Hasan won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first keeping in mind, the team batting second in both the ODI's won the match.
Opener Hamilton Masakadza who once again forced to lead the Zimbabwe side today as skipper, Prosper Utseya having failed to recover from the injury. Masakadza was in tremendous form as neither Bangladesh seamer or spinners could stop him from a fluent start with a cameo 84.
Masakadza began the Zimbabwe innings in a flurry after two quiet overs. He first attacked Nazamul Hossiain slamming him for two boundaries in one over. Even the last match hero spinner Abdur Razzak also received same treatment and was banged for two consecutive boundaries.
Nazmul dealt the first blow for Bangladesh dismissing Brendon Taylor for a sedate 2 off 15 balls.
World record holder in ODI batting, Charles Coventry started his innings in a similar pattern with punishing strokes. Both Coventry and Masakadza looked very comfortable and it looked Zimbabwe were on the way to a healthy total.
Things looked alarming for Bangladesh when Masakadza raced to his half-century from 36 balls with things becoming worse for the hosts as wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim failed to stump Coventry off Enamul providing him a lease of new life.
Coventry made Mushfiq and Bangladesh pay dearly as he struck for two sixes and finally luck deserted him as he top-edging Enamul to midwicket for a run-a-ball 29 with Zimbabwe losing their second wicket on 90 in 15.3 overs.
Forster Mutizwa in for an injured Tatenda Taibu did not trouble scorers as he went for a duck.
Bangladesh spinners slowly wove their web and Zimbabwean batsmen succumbed to their guile as runs and boundaries dried up. There were just three between overs 18.1 and 27.1.
Masakadza tried to accelerate and paid the price as he was out for 84 off 95 balls laced with 12 boundaries and one sixer.
The visitors tailed fail to wag as Waller, 27, and Elton Chigumbura, 20, could offer little resistance as they collapsed to 197 all out in 41.1 overs.
Enamul Haque junior in for Dollar Mahmud justified his inclusion with 3 for 45. Nazmul, the only fast bowler used, polished off the tail with a flattering figure of 3 for 13.
The fourth one-dayer would be played in Chittagong Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on November 3 and the fifth and final at the same venue on November 5.
