Bangladesh have been eliminated from the 16th Asian Games Football with one match to spare, losing to stronger United Arab Emirates (UAE) 0-3 in their second Group E match at the Yingdong Stadium in the Chinese city of Guangzhou Tuesday, reports UNB.
It was the second successive defeat for Bangladesh in the Guangzhou Asiad after conceding a 0-3 defeat against Uzbekistan in the opening match.
The day's match between World Cup playing UAE and minnows Bangladesh was locked in a goalless draw during the first half.
Bangladesh played completely defensive football all through to hold the Asian giants goalless in the first half, but they flopped in the 2nd half to concede three goals in a row.
Al Jenaiby Ahmed put the Middle East team ahead just one minute after the breather (46th minute), capitalising on a right wing cross of Al Abri Ahmed (1-0).
Abdalla Mohamed doubled the margin in the 63rd minute through a left footer from danger zone (2-0) while he further increased the winners' margin scoring his 2nd and the third goal for UAE in the 82nd minute (3-0).
Bangladesh, which was placed in tough Group E, will play their last match against Hong Kong Thursday (Nov 11) at 2 pm (BST) at the Haudu Stadium.
AFP adds: Defending champions Qatar were given an almighty fright by India Tuesday before sending them to the verge of elimination from the Asian Games tournament.
India took the lead but the Qataris battled back to score twice in the last 10 minutes of their Group D game and secure a 2-1 win. It left the Indians with no points and virtually no hope of qualifying for the knockout rounds.
Singapore are also in trouble after crashing 2-0 to Kuwait, leaving them with just a point to show from their two games and a must-win clash with India on Thursday.
The Kuwaiti win, secured with first-half goals by Ali Almaqseed and Mashari Alazmi, ensured they booked their place in last 16.
Thailand also stayed on course with a 1-1 draw against Oman, but coach Bryan Robson, the former England skipper, was disappointed not to have clinched three points.
