Bangladesh made a very disappointing start in the Kitply Cup Tri-Nation ODI Tournament conceding a 70-run defeat to Pakistan in the inaugural match at the Mirpur Shere-e-Bangla National Stadium (SBNS) in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
The match was reduced to 40-over a side due to rain.
In the day's match, pacer Dollar Mahmud made his debut for the hosts as he became the 90th ODI player for the Tigers.
This was also the 12th win for the Pakistan side on the trot, which will definitely enhance their morale before taking on old foes India in the 2nd match Tuesday, also at the same venue.
Replying to a fighting target of 234, Bangladesh were restricted at 163 for 8 in 40 overs with skipper Mohammad Ashraful managing an unconquered 56 off 93 balls decorated with three fours. This was also the 14th ODI fifty for the losing captain.
Abdur Razzak Raj, the other not out batsman with 26, added highest 42 runs in the 9th wicket after their side faced batting debacle losing 8 wickets at 121 runs.
Both the left-hand openers-Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees-made a decent start for the Tigers scoring 35 in the opening stand.
But after the departure of Nafees with 9 leaving the team total at 35, the batting wobble began for the home side as Tamim made 29, Rokibul 8, Kapali 0, Mushfiq 15, Riyad 7, Mashrafe 0, Dollar 0 failing to take the team total close to the target.
Leg spinner Shahid Afridi and pacer Wahab Riza claimed three wickets each for 19 and 22 runs respectively.
Earlier, riding on two useful fifties from Salman Butt and Mohammad Yusuf, Pakistan poised a handsome total of 233 for all in 39.3 overs.
Sent in to bat first, both the Pakistani openers-Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal-made a solid foundation for their side as they put up a sound 75 run opening stand.
Akmal departed for a handy 25 off 27 balls featuring two fours and a nice six over long off when he was brilliantly caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim diving to his right giving Dollar his maiden wicket in the 12th over of the innings.
One down Yunus Khan came in the middle but he had to return to the pavilion without playing a ball as he was brilliantly run out by Rokibul Hassan from the short mid-wicket when the team score was at 75 for 2.
Then dependable Mohammad Yusuf pairing with Butt ensured a smooth going for the visiting side as both of them added another 65-run in the 3rd wicket before Butt fell victim to leg spinner Alok Kapali.
Before that Butt completed his eight ODI half century to make 70 off 84 balls coloured with 10 glorious boundaries playing delightful strokes allover the ground.
Kapali then sent back hard hitter Shahid Afridi and Yusuf in 31st over to unsettle the Pakistan innings for a moment.
Afridi first threw his wicket away for 20 while attempting a pull shot and was caught at deep mid-wicket by Shahriar Nafees.
Then in the last ball of that same over, Mohammad Yusuf had to put an end to his innings of 59 off 56 balls being caught by Razzak at mid-off, leaving the total at 5/180 in 30.6 overs.
Skipper Shoaib Malik was the 6th batsman to depart for 9 being bowled by Razzak, giving the left-arm spinner his first scalp in the match.
Speedster Mashrafe then trapped Misbah ul Haq lbw with a slower delivery before the strongly built batsman played a little cameo innings of 39 off 22 balls hitting three fours and two sixes.
In the same over, Mashrafe also picked up the wicket of Fawad Alam 2 to leave the opponent total at 232 for 8 in 38 overs.
