Sunday, 30 August 2009

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought strong international support and high technological and financial assistance for implementing comprehensive programmes being undertaken for adaptation to climate change and mitigation of its severe adversities in Bangladesh, reports UNB.
"Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. It deserves strong international support as the country is being terrifically affected by global warming for no fault of its own," she said.
The Prime Minister made the remarks when newly appointed Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Urs Herren paid a courtesy call on her at her official residence Jamuna Saturday.
Sheikh Hasina told the Swiss envoy that her government is fully aware of the disastrous impacts of the global climate change and taking necessary preventive and adaptive measures.
The measures include river dredging and reclaiming lands, constructing embankments, and creating green belt in the coastal region to save the country's people from natural disasters.
She told the diplomat that Bangladesh always considers Switzerland as a dependable friend and a partner in development.
She hailed consistent Swiss contributions towards sustainable socio-economic development of the country.
The Prime Minister thanked the development partners, including the Swiss government, for their valuable assistance in holding the country's last general election in a free, fair, neutral and acceptable manner.
She said that the people of the country had waited for long for their democratic government cast their votes spontaneously as they got a flawless voter list for the polls in the changed situation.
