Bangladesh elected to ITU council

Bangladesh has won the election to become a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)’s council. ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs. ‘We have been elected council member of ITU from the Asia Pacific region,’ State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said on Monday. The voting was held at Busan City of South Korea during the ITU’s annual meeting on Monday, he informed. Bangladesh received 115 of the 167 votes, he said. The results placed Bangladesh on the 7th spot among the 13 council members from the region elected for 4 years. ‘The victory is an international recognition of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s vision of Digital Bangladesh, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said from Busan. ‘We’ve taken our place in another internationally significant organisation,’ the junior ICT minister said, according to bdnews24.com.
