Hosts Bangladesh clinched the Islami Bank Men's Junior AHF Cup Hockey crown with all-win record beating Oman 4-0 goals in the final match at Maulana Bhashani National Stadium in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
With the day's result, Bangladesh earned a rare honour of scoring 35 goals without conceding any goal in five matches after beating Chinese Taipei 7-0, Thailand 10-0, Oman 7-0 and Sri Lanka 7-0 in group matches.
However, both champions Bangladesh and runners-up Oman qualified for the next year's final round to be held in Malaysia as the finalists of the just-concluded Men's Junior AHF Cup Qualifiers.
In the day's title deciding match, penalty corner specialist Khorshedur Rahman struck twice while Ashraful and Sarwar scored one goal each for the home side.
Oman adopted an attacking game from the beginning with forwards Muhanna Naser Ali and Shafi Talib Nasib creating strong pressure on Bangladesh defense and managed a penalty corner in the 3rd minute of the match. But, Salmeen Ahmed dragged the ball wide.
After tackling the opponent pressure, Bangladesh made a counter attack in the 9th minute, but forward Milon Hossain, standing unmarked only a few feet from Omani post, failed to flick the ball into open net, off a neat cross by Moinul Islam Koushik.
Bangladesh opened the account in the 16th minute as Khorshed sounded the board from a penalty corner, beating Omani goalie Ahmed Adil (1-0).
Defender Ashraful doubled the lead in the 24th minute by another penalty corner (2-0).
Three minutes after the resumption, Khorshed scored his 2nd goal, the 3rd for Bangladesh, by another low drag, off a Milan push, stopped by Sarwar (3-0)
Skipper Sarwar scored the 4th goal for Bangladesh in the 50th minute by a powerful hit, utilizing a left flank pass from Mainul Islam Koushik (4-0).
Earlier, in a place-deciding match, Chinese Taipei finished 3rd in the five-team fray beating Sri Lanka 6-2 at the same venue on Sunday morning.
Budhaka Ediresinghe put Sri Lanka ahead in the 14th minute from a penalty corner (1-0) while Taipei midfielder Yi Tise restored the parity in the 22nd minute by a field goal (1-1).
Hsi Fan put Taipei ahead in the 38th minute scoring an easy goal off a nice through pass of Sheng Po (2-1)
In the 45th minute, Taipei skipper Hsiang Yu hit the ball into the pad of Sri Lankan goalie Rukhsan and Hsiang Li scored from a rebound (3-1) while Sheng Po hit the 4th goal in the 48th minute with a cracking angular hit (4-1).
Taipei medio Tsung Jen scored the 5th goal by his solo effort in the 51st minute before hitting the board with a reverse hit (5-1)
