Bangladesh face Pakistan in opening match today

Sunday, 8 June 2008

Bangladesh faces Pakistan in the opening match of the Kitply Cup Tri-Nation ODI Cricket Tournament today (Sunday) at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in the city, reports UNB.

The day night match will commence at 3 pm.

Eight satellite channels-Neo TV (India), Geo TV (Pakistan), BTV (Bangladesh), Astro TV (Malaysia, Brunei), Direct TV (USA), ATN (Canada), Super Sport (Southern Africa), GTV (UK, Europe) -- will telecast the match live from the SBNS.

Ahead of the first encounter, both the teams had their full stretch practice sessions at the match venue Saturday. The home side made their practice in the afternoon while the Pakistan side later in the evening.

Top order batsman Nazimuddin and all rounder Mehrab Hossain Jr. have been left out from the 14-member home side squad for the first ODI while there is a very good chance to debut promising pacer Dollar Mahmud. The final eleven will be announced at the toss.

Besides, all rounder Alok Kapali, who has been replaced injured Aftab Ahmed, might be seen in tomorrow's match.

Tiger's coach Jamie Siddons expressed his satisfaction about overall preparations while speaking at a press conference this afternoon at the SBNS. He said, "We have exactly what we wanted. We have center wicket preparation matches and we won one out of the two games. I'm really happy with the preparations."

Answering to a query, the Australian born coach said, "I think Asia Cup is another tournament apart from the Tri-Series. This is the one (Tri-Series) that we are focusing now and that's really important for us. We hope to put some competitive cricket out there and if we got a win that would be fantastic."

The 43-year old shaven headed coach also emphasized on doing well in every department of the game as he thinks that a side can't have a win without bowling, fielding and batting well.

Siddons told another questioner that he is enjoying every moment while coaching Bangladesh team and he thinks that the players are developing very well. "During the Pakistan tour and the home series against Ireland they (Bangladesh) did well and that is massively encouraging." he added.

On the other hand, the Pakistan side, which whitewashed Bangladesh 5-0 at their home soil in May, is very much optimistic to do well.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik said: "Our target is to maintain consistency. We won eleven matches in a row and want to continue that winning streak. Everyone of our side is fit and we are looking forward to play good cricket."

Meanwhile, the Indian team, another participant in the Tri Series, arrives tomorrow morning.

Pakistan will play against old foes India in the 2nd ODI on June 10, also at the SBNS, while Bangladesh will face India in the 3rd match on June 12.
