Bangladesh, India for half-yearly trade ministers meet

Bangladesh and India Sunday stressed the need for holding half-yearly meeting of their trade ministers and more frequent secretary-level meeting to remove trade barriers between the two countries, reports UNB.
Both Finance and Commerce Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam and Visiting Indian Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh came up with the view when the later called on Aziz at his Commerce Ministry conference room.
They also discussed how the trade facilities under SAFTA framework could be expanded and laid emphasis on making BIMSTEC more effective as a strategy to bridge SAARC and ASEAN countries.
The Trade Negotiation Committee (TNC) meeting of BIMSTEC is scheduled to be held in Dhaka in the last quarter of September.
Finance Adviser Aziz called upon the Indian minister to remove all sorts of non-tariff barriers Bangladeshi products face while entering the Indian market.
Ramesh proposed setting up land customs stations at Mijoram on the Indian side and at Demagiri of Bangladesh. He also requested for developing Sutarkandi-Sheola Road in Bangladesh.
The Indian minister also invited the Finance and Commerce Adviser to visit India.
Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Feroz Ahmed and Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh S Chakravorty were present at the meeting.
