Bangladeshi IT companies have been successfully competing in the global market as the demand of software developed by local firms has been increasing rapidly, reports BSS.

According to Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Service (BASIS), about 20,000 IT engineers and software programmers are working in 400 organisations and the software developed by them was being exported to 20 countries like countries of Europe and Japan.

"We are completely working with foreign clients and our business is boosting quickly," said JM Akbar, chairman of BJIT Limited, a Bangladesh-Japan joint venture IT company.

He said over 90 per cent of the sales of the company is in Japan and Europe and its global sales are at US $3.5 million annually.

Akbar said the number of employees of the company was 165 and 52 computer engineers were employed in Japan who are showing talent in the foreign country.

Akbar said BJIT is the only Bangladeshi company that provides high end 3D CAD solution in the global market. "We operate in four business areas such as Software Development, Software Testing, CAD/CAE and Technology Consulting and gained expertise in CAD/CAE services to produce 2D and 3D models," he said.

Besides experiences in CATIA, he said, the company has completed projects with tools like I- DEAS and Autocad and is spending about Tk 5.0 million (50 lakh) every year to build human resources.

Akbar said the company's offshore rates are up to 50 per cent lower than those of the main competitors in India and China and the company is getting a remarkable part of business in Japan and Europe.

Chief Operating Officer of BJIT Limited Ahmedul Islam said their company was making various applications like calendar, memory book, games for mobile phones and digital camera.

He said the company has so far developed at least 100 pieces of software which are very popular in Japan. "Each piece of software developed by BJIT is being sold at 40 to 50 US dollars in Japan," he said, adding that one of its software has been recognised as the third best-selling software in Japan, which is the second largest software market after the US.

Timo Vanttinen, CEO of BJIT Limited, said, "We have created a unique atmosphere for local programmers to work professionally, but our main concern is the high cost of internet bandwidth price."

"The price of internet bandwidth is many times higher than in India, even more expensive than in Japan," he said.

Vanttinen, a Finnish national said, the trained consultant team of the company acquired unique IT savvy with strong understanding of trouble shooting and difficulties related to managing offshore projects.

"We have also undertaken a plan to develop a piece of world-class anti-virus software to meet the demand of our clients."
