AFC ASIAN CUP QUALIFIERS
Bangladesh lose 1-0 to Singapore
Wednesday, 1 April 2026
Bangladesh wrapped up their AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Singapore away from home on Tuesday, report agencies.
The visitors struggled to settle in the first half and conceded in the 31st minute when Harhys Stewart converted from close range to put Singapore ahead.
A first-half goal from Stewart meant Gavin Lee's men topped their qualification group with 14 points from four wins and two draws.
Prior to the game, Singapore booked their progression to the Asian Cup after defeating Hong Kong 2-1 away in November.
In front of a crowd of about 30,000, both sides struggled to keep sustained possession early on, with clear-cut chances proving difficult to come by.
Bangladesh showed more urgency after the interval and pressed for an equaliser. Their best opportunity came in the 79th minute, but Mirajul Islam's delicate touch from a Hamza Choudhury cross struck the post, denying the side a leveller.
A superb block from Safuwan Baharudin saw the first attempt saved, but there were strong calls for a penalty after he appeared to have caught a Bangladesh attacker charging onto the rebound. Referee Benjamin Abraham however, was unmoved.
Despite their late push, Bangladesh could not break through as the hosts held on to secure a narrow victory. With the result, Bangladesh finished third in Group C with five points from five matches, recording one win, two draws and two losses. Singapore topped the group with 11 points, followed by Hong Kong with eight, while India ended at the bottom.
