Bangladesh make a winning start in SAG hockey

Sunday, 31 January 2010

Defender Mamunur Rahman Chayan showed his penalty corner prowess as Bangladesh made a winning start in the hockey of the 11th South Asian Games beating Sri Lanka 3-1 at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium Saturday, reports BSS.
Apart from Chayan's brace, Kamruzzaman Rana netted the other for the hosts while Mulaffer struck the consolation goal for Lankans.
Sri Lankan was the team who had broken Bangladesh heart with a shock 1-0 win for the bronze medal in the Colombo SA Games in 2006.
Bangladesh made a nervous start but soon regrouped themselves to take control of the proceedings.
"Actually, it was our first match and we all were a bit nervous but we recovered well in the second half to win the game convincingly," said captain Moshiur Rahman Biplob after the match.
Bangladesh's German coach Gehard was satisfied with the performance of his boys, but declined to talk about their loopholes.
Bangladesh went ahead through a penalty-corner goal converted by Chayan after combination of Rasel Mahmud Jimmy and Biplob three minutes from the break.
The joy of hosts lasted only two minutes as Sri Lanka restored the parity in the 34th minute when Mulaffer ran down from the middle to enter the box unleashing a fierce hit past Bangladesh goalkeeper Kiron.
After the breather, Bangladesh looked more organised and controlled the midfield to threaten the rival defence time and again.
But the Sri Lankans were not ready to be cowed down as Mulaffer almost found the Bangladesh net through a tricky shot with Chayan making a goalline save five minutes into the second half.
Afterwards, Bangladesh stepped up the pressure to go close twice before Chayan converted a penalty corner to give Bangladesh a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute.
Trailing Sri Lanka went all out for the equaliser leaving yawning gaps and conceded the crucial third goal in the 60th minute.
Jimmy sent a minus deep inside the box that beat Sri Lankan goalkeeper Rathnasiri and Kamruzzaman pushed the ball home from a handshaking distance to seal the fate of the match.
In the day's first match, favourite India scored an overwhelming 21-0 win over hapless Nepal.
Title aspirants India were leading by a flattering margin of 10-0 at the breather.
Captain Ajitesh scored five goals, Mohammad and Yuraj netted three goals each, Hamza, Ragunath and Promod scored two goals each and Belsajar, Innocent, Dhramv and Roshan struck one goal apiece in Indian goal feast.
