FE REPORT | Sunday, 23 July 2023

Bangladesh has been encouraging increased stakes of renewable energy in its fuel-mix, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Nasrul Hamid said Saturday.
Around 825.23 megawatt (MW) of electricity is being added to the national grid although overall electricity generation from renewable energy is around 1194 MW, he said.
Mr Hamid was speaking at the 'Energy Transition Ministerial Meeting' organized on the occasion of the G-20 conference being held in Goa, India.
Work to add some 8,668 MW more electricity to the national grid from renewable energy sources is ongoing, he added.
Some 9,930 MW more electricity generation projects are in the pipeline, said Mr Hamid.
The government has a target to increase the stake of renewable energy in the fuel mix to 40 per cent of the overall generation by 2041.
Some 6.0 million solar home systems are illuminating around 20 million people across the country, he said. Seven solar parks have already been established in the country.
Bangladesh has prepared a wind resource map with the help of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
Five wind-based projects are being implemented to generate around 245 MW of electricity.
Works are there to import hydro-power from Nepal and Bhutan, he added.
India's Power and Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh, Brazil's Mineral and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira, Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif also spoke on the occasion.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event through video message.
