Friday, 20 June 2008

A brilliant hattrick by Rajon enabled Bangladesh to reach semi-finals of the 3rd Men's AHF Cup Hockey as group champions crushing Uzbekistan by 8-3 goals at the Delta Sports Complex in Singapore today (Thursday), reports UNB.

With the ever-biggest victory over Uzbekistan in their last Pool A match, Bangladesh top the group as the unbeaten team securing 10 points from four outings.

Pool A champions Bangladesh will play the first semifinal, likely against Hong Kong on Saturday (June 21).

Apart from Zahidul Islam Rajon's three goals in a row, vice-captain Russell Mahmud Jimmy struck twice while skipper Maksud Alam Habul, Krishna Kumar and Mahmudur Rahman Choyon scored one goal each for Bangladesh.

On way to the semis, Bangladesh earned an empathic 6-1 victory over Brunei Darussalam, 3-2 win over Chinese Taipei and played to a 1-1 draw with hosts Singapore in their previous group encounters.

With the day's feat, Bangladesh earned the right to play in the 10-team Asia Cup Hockey along with Oman (Pool B). Six top seeded Asian countries -- India, Pakistan, South Korea, China, Malaysia and Japan -- will directly play in the Asia Cup.
