Friday, 27 June 2014

The Bangladesh candidate has been elected a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for the 2nd successive term. The ministry of foreign affairs of Bangladesh on Friday said the re-election of the Bangladesh’s candidate has ‘brightened’ the country’s image abroad and testifies to its achievements in MDGs related to women’s issues. Ambassador Ismat Jahan in Brussels will serve on the committee for the next four years – 2015 to 2018, the ministry said. She was a CEDAW member between 2011 and 2014. She bagged 143 votes, the 5th highest, in Thursday’s (New York time) election held at the UN headquarters in the north-eastern US city. AKA Momen, Bangladesh’s permanent envoy to the UN, said the election would uphold the country’s image in the international arena, according to bdnews24.com.
