Golfers of Bangladesh have created sensation as for the first time in the 26-year history of the South Asian Games, all the three flags flying simultaneously on the podium belonged to Bangladesh as they have won all the three medals of the event. Bangladesh golfers made a clean sweep of the individual event of golf at the Kurmitola Golf Course in the city (Saturday), reports BSS.
Dulal Hossain, Jamal Hossain Mollah and Mohammad Zakiruzaman scored 277 (11 under par), 280 (8 under par) and 283 (5 under par) to win the gold, silver and bronze respectively.
It was an unprecedented incident in the sports history of Bangladesh and the newly included discipline of golf provided the unique moment of happiness for sports fraternity.
It would be worth mentioning that all the three golfers were also the part of the gold winning team of the team event.
Dulal the ultimate winner was hero of the day. He was behind Jamal at the resumption of the play but his golf club shone with the sun and all the others were left behind.
As Dulal continued his march the others followed him. However his supreme authority had positive effect upon his teammates. Jamal and Zakiruzzaman also raised their level to outplay the others except Dulal.
An ecstatic atmosphere prevailed at the golf course. Finance minister and chairman of the organizing committee Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and president of Bangladesh Olympic Association and Army Chief General Mohammad Abdul Mubeen were present to celebrate the historic moment.
Muhith congratulated the winners on behalf of the government and said that the support to golf would continue. 'Golf has lifted the image of the country and the golfers did it. The support will be continued for the development of the game,' said Muhith.
Dulal was celebrating the unique feat. 'I was confident that in my own yard I will not let the country down. I tried my best to prove my abilities and I hope golf from now on will be treated with respect so we can bring more laurels,' said Dulal.
Jamal was also buoyant. 'In the wider view of the event we are more encouraged to lift the flag further in the future; we have outplayed many good players of the sub-continent. so why not to continue the trend' said Dulal.
Zakiruzzaman presented a different view. 'It is the result of perfect teamwork. we worked hard and focused on the ultimate success from the very beginning. The laurel was the logical consequence of our commitment,' said the bronze winner.
