Bangladesh to observe World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day will be observed in the country today (Friday) as elsewhere in the world with the theme "No child should die of diabetes", reports UNB.
On this occasion Bangladesh Diabetic Association will hold a rally at Manik Mia Avenue, free diabetes tests in different parts of the city and organise a drawing competition for children at the Institute of Fine Arts at the Dhaka University.
Addressing a press conference at BIRDEM conference room Thursday, President of DAB Professor AK Azad Khan said that five million people in the country were suffering from diabetes while only 25 per cent of the patients have access to treatment.
He said that 1.2 million (12 lakh) diabetic patients were taking treatment across the country.
He also said that BIRDEM spent about Tk 430 million for insulin and medicine in 2006-07 fiscal year for free treatment of the patients.
