Bangladesh trade fair in Delhi in March

Monday, 3 September 2007

India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) has pleaded for 5-year multiple Indian visas for Bangladeshi businessmen to facilitate easy and frequent travels to the neighbouring country, reports UNB.
Leaders of the joint chamber made the appeal drawing attention of Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pinak Ranjan Chakrabarti who was present in their meeting with Industries Adviser Geeti Ara Safiya Chowdhury at her ministry.
Placing the proposal, IBCCI President Abdul Matlub Ahmed pointed out that under the present system businessmen can get at best one-year multiple visas from Indian authorities. "This should be raised to five-year multiple visas to facilitate trade between the neighbouring countries," he said.
The IBCCI noted that the chamber would organise a Bangladesh Trade Fair in New Delhi in March 2008 in cooperation with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh and the Indian government.
Matlub told the meeting that the trade fair would display 18 Bangladeshi products, which have good export potentials in the Indian market. These products will include readymade garments, cements and leather and leather goods.
"We can raise our export volume to India to 1.0 billion US dollars through these products to reduce trade imbalance," he said.
He also urged the Indian government to accept certificates from the Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) and implement the agreement between the BSTI and Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS).
Responding to this appeal, the Indian High Commissioner told the Indo-Bangla chamber leaders that his government is working on the issues.
