Bangladesh upset finalist Maldives

Saturday, 8 December 2012

Bangladesh Under-23 team displayed their brilliance untimely beating tournament finalist Maldives by 1-0 goal in their last match of the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football at the Jayathilake Stadium, Nawalapitya in Sri Lanka Friday, reports UNB.
Striker Touhidul Alam scored the match-winner in the 31st minute after the Bangladesh strikers spoiled a couple of chances earlier, according to a message received here from Bangladesh Football Federation.
After making early exit from the four-nation Sri Lankan meet with two successive defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka by identical 0-1 margin, Bangladesh, however, salvaged some pride upsetting tournament favourites Maldives.
Bangladesh team had nothing else but to show their character and the players have done in a dominating style forcing Maldives to concede their first defeat in the meet.
Despite the day's defeat, Maldives will play the final Sunday against the winners of Pakistan and Sri Lanka as they earlier beat hosts Sri Lanka 3-0 and Pakistan 1-0 in the first two matches.
In the day's match, Bangladesh attackers cornered their opponents with strings of attacks from the very beginning.
.In the 11th minute, a Touhid-header off Linkon cross went straight to Maldives goalie Sahuran. Touhid again failed to head the ball past the Maldives goalie after Ronny paved the way for him by heading a Uttam free kick in his way. Bangladesh managed four corners in the first ten minutes.
Young forward Sohel Rana blasted the ball over the crosspiece in the 26th minute.
Touhid, who missed an open net in the 30th minute failing to tap the ball home off a Linkon cross, mended his failure just one minute later with an opportunistic strike.
Watching out of position the opponent custodian Sahuran, Touhid placed the ball over the Maldives goalie, but the ball rebounded from crosspiece and he again kept his cool to send the ball into the net in his second effort (1-0).
