Bangladeshi businessman shot dead in Johannesburg

A Bangladeshi businessman was shot dead in Johannesburg area of South Africa on Tuesday. A group of suspected extortionists called Alauddin Jewel out of his residence in the outskirts of Johannesburg city on the night of August 18 and opened fire on him for declining to pay extortion, leaving him dead, relatives of the deceased said on Thursday. They said Alauddin has been doing business in South Africa since 2004. Alauddin, who went to South Africa to look after his business in early 2004, was the son of Khaja Main Uddin of Baliakandi village of Senbagh upazila of Noakhali district in Bangladesh. Family sources, quoting Alauddin’s neighbours, said he was sleeping at his residence in Johannesburg on Tuesday night. Some local miscreants stormed his residence and asked for extortion. At one point, they shot Alauddin indiscriminately as he declined to pay the amount of money they demanded from him, leaving him critically injured. The miscreants also looted his house, family sources said. Hearing the news, some expatriate Bangladeshis rescued him and rushed him to a local hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead. His family members sought help of the government of Bangladesh to bring the body to back to Bangladesh quickly, according to a news agency.
