Bangladeshi expatriates in US urged to stand by Sidr-hit people

Thursday, 27 December 2007

Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA M Humayan Kabir urged Bangladeshi expatriates in the USA to energize themselves in the spirit of the Liberation War to stand by their cyclone-stricken brothers and sisters, reports UNB.
Humayan made the call while speaking at a discussion marking the Victory Day at Atlanta in Georgia, said a press release of the Bangladesh Embassy.
Bangladesh Association of Georgia organised the discussion to raise funds for the Sidr victims in Bangladesh.
The ambassador said Bangladeshi people deserve the expatriates' support for good initiatives currently underway so that Bangladesh could stand as a dignified nation before the international community.
Citing enormous sacrifice of Bangladeshi people for an independent nation, Humayan underscored the need for making the new generation aware of the supreme sacrifice that their predecessors made for securing a free homeland.
Appreciating the role of the new generation of Bangladeshi Americans, the ambassador expressed the hope that they would continue to play a representational role in introducing Bangladeshi culture and heritage to the mainstream US society and the global community.
Chaired by the Association president Reza Karim, the discussion was also addressed, among others, by Association secretary general Ali Hossain and First Secretary of the Embassy Monowar Hossain.
The Association raised more than 10,000 US dollars from the Bangladesh community members for the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund.
The ambassador assured the Bangladeshi expatriates that the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington and its consulates in New York and Los Angeles fully recognise the value that the expatriates could create for Bangladesh and would extend all cooperation to cater to the needs of the Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) living in the USA.
The Bangladesh Embassy provided a two-day mobile consular service to the residents of Georgia and contiguous states.
