Bangladeshi journalist team should visit Tipaimukh dam site

Thursday, 20 August 2009

INDIA should invite the Bangladeshi journalists to visit Tipaimukh dam. Through this dam a wall is being raised, standing on the way of smooth bilateral relations between the two countries It gives a negative signal to both the countries. In addition to this, Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan uttered undiplomatic words on June 21. This added extra fuel to strain relations further. Voices are being raised from different corners of the country to withdraw him from Bangladesh. We don't know what the Indian government will do. No high-ranking diplomat should become controversial in a foreign country where he or she is posted. He or she should not violate the basic norms of diplomacy and its related code of conduct.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh parliamentary team that had gone to India failed to assure the nation about India doing no harm to our country. To ensure more transparency and accountability, the Indian government should invite our journalists to visit the Tipaimukh dam. In this context, a media delegation, covering both electronic and print media, should be sent by our government to observe the situation there. All concerned would expect that India would not pursue any unilateral course of action that affects a lower riparian country like Bangladesh. If New Delhi does so adamantly, that will be a total disregard for international law. India should also disclose all information about the Tipaimukh dam through the media. Then the peoples of both countries will be in a better position to appreciate the situation.
