Bangladeshis in Angarpota, Dahagram to cast votes

Monday, 29 December 2008

RANGPUR, Dec 28 (BSS): The voters in Dahagram-Angarpota enclaves under Patgram Upazila in Lalmonirhat-1 constituency would cast their votes in the ninth parliamentary election today, officials told the BSS Sunday.
The Election Commission (EC) has completed all the preparations for collecting the votes there, EC officials said.
In all, 5,036 voters are expected to cast their votes at three polling centres in the two enclaves, connected with mainland Bangladesh by the Tin-Bigha Corridor, election officials said.
To facilitate polling, said officials, India would keep the corridor open from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm today without any break, said officials. Later, the corridor would be reopened, when necessary at night, to facilitate counting of the ballots, movement of the election officials and other election related work, they said.
Usually, India keeps the Tin-Bigha Corridor open for 12 hours from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm everyday.
The BDR and Indian Border Security Force at a flag meeting on December 18 agreed to keep the corridor open for longer to facilitate the elections, movement of the election officials and poll materials.
The two border guards also agreed to maintain strong vigilance along the common borders to check any possible trespassing across the international boundary.
The BDR Sector Commander at Rangpur Colonel Aftabul Islam and the Indian BSF Deputy Inspector General at Jalpaiguri SK Burma led their respective sides at the meeting.
The meeting also decided on an agreed number of election officials for the polls related movements.
A striking force comprising BDR personnel will standby at Dahagram union office premises to rush to the enclaves when necessary to maintain law and order and peaceful conduct of the polls, senior BDR officials told the news agency tonight.
