Friday, 14 May 2010

Bangladesh's hope of reaching the final round of the Asian Games Hockey was almost shattered as they played to a 3-3 draw against Sri Lanka in the Robi Asian Games Qualifying Hockey at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium Thursday, reports UNB.
Pre-tournament favourite Bangladesh, which made a flying start according to their plan of clinching the top slot of qualifying hockey outplaying Thailand 8-1, strayed from the goal following their debacle in the next three matches.
Hosts Bangladesh conceded a frustrating 5-7 goals defeat against Chinese Taipei in the 2nd match and split points with Hong Kong in a 2-2 draw in the 3rd match.
Bangladesh, now in the 5th place with five points from four matches, must have to win their remaining two matches against Singapore (May 15) and Oman (May 16) to keep alive their hope of making the final round.
Chinese Taipei dominated the meet with unbeaten record securing nine points from five matches while Omarn followed closely, also with unbeaten run collecting eight points from four matches.
Singapore bagged seven points from four matches while Hong Kong managed six points from five encounters, ahead of Bangladesh.
Two top teams of the seven-nation meet will qualify for the final round of the Asian Games.
In the day's match, Bangladesh dominated the first half by a Maksud Alam Habul's field goal scored in the 10th minute (1-0). Hettiarachchi leveled the margin for Sri Lanka in the 45th minute from a penalty stroke (1-0).
Three minutes later, vice-captain Mamunur Rahman Chayan again put Bangladesh ahead, also from penalty stroke (2-1) while Panditharatne neutralized the margin for Sri Lanka in the 55th minute converting a penalty corner (2-2).
Pushkor Krisha Mimo again took Bangladesh ahead scoring a field goal in the 58th minute (3-2). But Bangladesh failed keep the lead for the third time after conceding a goal in the 66th minute from a penalty stroke taken by Hettiarachchi (3-3).
In the day's other two matches, Oman earned their 2nd win in the meet defeating lowly Thailand by 4-2 goals (first half 2-2) while league leaders Chinese Taipei split points with Hong Kong in a 1-1 draw at the same venue.
