Bangladesh's railway woes

Wednesday, 16 September 2020

It was a longstanding demand to revive the once-ailing Bangladesh Railway, especially when this mode of transports proves to be safer, more comfortable and cost-effective. Unfortunately, the railway service has not improved up to the optimum level. A series of projects were taken up and various procurements were made but those failed to bring improvements.
We were optimistic about improvement in the sector since there was political commitment for the purpose. But, as allegations have it, some projects were undertaken on political considerations while some others were allegedly meant for benefiting officials concerned. Railway could have played a significant role in our national development. Traffic congestion could have been addressed and transportation of goods made easier if the railway sector had really improved. It's still a sad story.
