Banglar Shourav back to business

CHITTAGONG, Aug 5: MV Banglar Shourav an oil tanker owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), which had exploded two years back, and undergone extensive reconstruction finally anchored at the Dolphin Jetty of Eastern Refinery with a load of around 11,500 tonnes of crude oil.
With this fresh journey the BSC owned Banglar Shourav opened a new horizon for the country's shipbuilding industry, concerned sources said.
Earlier in June 2005, one cadet and pumpman was killed, a chief officer received serious burn-injury and the vessel was completely damaged while making the damaged Banglar Shourav gas-free.
The damaged vessel which is capable of containing around 15,000 tonnes of fuel oil was under two-year long re-construction work by the Karnaphuli Shipbuilder Ltd a local shipbuilding industry, owned by Engineer MA Rashid. Two sets of agreements were executed with Karnaphuli Shipbuilders Ltd to repair the engine at a cost of Tk 90 million as against to reconstructing the body of the damaged vessel at a cost of Tk 232.5 million.
The task of repairing and re-construction continued in collaboration with the Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd (CDDL) and Chittagong Port (CP).
BSC, CDDL, CP and other concerned parties are satisfied with the task of re-constructing the vessel worth around Tk 2.0 billion (Tk 200 crore) spending only Tk 322 million and making it fit to transport oil again.
Talking to this correspondent, Engineer MA Rashid said : "I think it is possible to construct a new ship of similar nature, or of most modern one, it we get proper government patronage.''
