The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Wednesday directed all commercial banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) to freeze bank accounts and seize all saving certificates of immediate past prime minister Khaleda Zia, her son Arafat Rahman Koko and 11 others connected with the family.
The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the board has issued letters to the banks and NBFIs asking them to freeze their bank accounts and seize their all kinds of saving instruments, reliable sources said.
The 11 individuals live in Khaleda Zia's Moynul Road residence.
The board has already frozen bank accounts of Tareq Zia, the detained elder son of Khaleda Zia.
Sources said the immediate past prime minister and her family members might face legal actions if the government finds any mismatch between their tax returns and wealth statements.
Meanwhile, the board has filed around 20 cases against former politicians for evasion of taxes.
Among them, the government has jailed some of the former MPs, politicians and their family members.
On August 2, the NBR directed the banks to freeze bank accounts of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members, including her sister Sheikh Rehana, her husband Dr MA Wazed, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul.
The bank accounts include those of the Grenade Victims Welfare Fund and the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum maintained by Sheikh Hasina.
The CIC has sent letters to all commercial banks and NBFIs asking them to provide details of the bank accounts of around 55 politicians and former lawmakers including Sheikh Hasina, sources said.
In the letters, the NBR also asked the banks and the NBFIs to freeze their bank accounts and seize their savings certificates, they further said.
Besides, Khaleda Zia and her son Arafat Rahman Koko recently paid tax taking the advantage of the existing opportunity to disclose their undisclosed money on payment of 5.0 per cent tax in addition to normal tax rate.
But, for procedural problem, the board did not accept their tax returns. Later, they have filed proper income tax returns, which were accepted by the board.
