Banking for tokais
Wednesday, 4 June 2014
Media reports say the Bangladesh Bank has launched a banking service for the street children, which will allow them to open a bank account with Tk 10 only.
Street children are usually found at the vegetable markets for carrying back the purchases, either to the vehicle parked nearby or even back home if you are living nearby.
They are usually called "Tokai", a popular word for the street children.
However, such children are usually unlettered. For them drawing funds from banks by checks or other written forms or 'debit' instruments could lead to difficulties.
Some criminal-minded people may fleece the children. The dishonest bank employees may also exploit the ignorance of the poor children.
This may thus lead to a new way of corruption. However, when the bank account opening has been successful for rural marginal farmers, this can be tried out for the street children also.
