Banks asked to offer attractive benefits to NRBs

Civil Aviation and Tourism minister G M Quader Tuesday urged banks to offer every benefit to expatiates in order to encourage them in using formal means of remittance transfer.
"Our expatriates go to the hundi traders for sending their hard-earned money as they provide some special facilities and favours," the minister said adding that banking service providers need to offer the same if they want to attract them.
The minister said this while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Janata Bank's automated NRB booth at the Zia International Airport. The online booth has been equipped to provide round the clock online banking services directly connected to the banks NRB branch in Motijheel.
Praising Janata Bank for launching such an innovative offer for returning migrants, he hoped that NRB's would feel more comfortable and safer using those.
Elias Ahmed, expatriate welfare and overseas employment secretary also attended the inaugural ceremony as guest of honor.
Quoting a statistics, he said over 50 to 60 per cent expatriates use Hundi, the informal means of money transferring, for their special offers. We need to upgrade and modify our formal means of money transferring to tap-in those as well, he added.
The ceremony was presided over by chairman of Janata Bank Ltd Suhel Ahmed Choudhury while CEO & MD SM Aminur Rahman delivered welcome speech.
In explaining the latest establishment Mr Suhel Ahmed Choudhury in his speech said his bank as a government owned bank aims to provide its customers (specially NRB's) every available facilities powered by modern technologies.
"We like to give returning migrants a feeling of special treatment and sense security," the Janata Bank Chairman said.
NRB's on their arrival would able to deposit all the amount they bring along in the airport NRB booth and would feel safe on their way to home, he said adding that they will able to withdraw their money from all the Janata Bank's NRB booths in different parts of the city.
He also demanded the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and Civil Aviation Ministry for advertisement permission inside the Zia International Airport along with Sylhet and Chittagong airports.
