Banning gambling

Saturday, 15 February 2020

The High Court has delivered a significant judgement banning all kinds of gambling, involving cards or roll of dice or luck and through games like bingo, declaring all such acts as criminal offence. The court has asked the authorities concerned to stop such acts all over the country. The HC has observed that the games that depend on luck or chance, not competence, are banned.
Unfortunately, gambling spread here and there but last year's crackdown on illegal casinos raised hopes among the commoners. The court appreciated such drives against gambling and illegal casino business. Gambling not only ruins human potential but it is also a source and vehicle of spending of ill-gotten money. It was reported that casinos had connection with extortion, bribe, other forms of corruption and capital flight.
Therefore, while ban on gambling is welcome, it is also important to address the issues that give rise to acts of gambling in society. Good governance and equitable distribution of resources can stop such acts. Justice is the enemy of gambling.
