Barisal bus collision kills 11, injures 50

BAGERHAT, Apr 9 (UNB): At least 11 people were killed and 50 injured, 10 of them critically, as two buses collided in a terrible accident on the Khulna-Mawa Highway in Mollarhat Upazila Thursday.
Five men, three women and three children are among the dead. Three of them were identified as Dipa Begum (27), bus-driver Zia Mia (40), and Bilkis Begum (20).
Police and witnesses said a Khulna-bound bus of Sundarban Paribahan from Dhaka rammed into another bus of Rupashi Paribahan bound for Madaripur from Khulna at noon, killing nine passengers instantly and injuring 52 others.
Two of the injured later died at Fakirhat Health Complex.
"The accident occurred at noon as the drivers of both the vehicles lost control over the steering while giving side to each other," said a police account of the accident.
The rest of the injured were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital, Fakirhat and Mollarhat Health Complexes, where condition of 10 of them was stated critical.
All the victims were passengers of the two buses, police sources said.
"The front parts of both the vehicles got twisted under the impact of the head-on collision and lay as useless wrecks on the busy route, disrupting traffic for some time," said a spot account of the fatal accident.
