Barisal City Corporation announces Tk 2.75b budget

BARISAL, July 12: Barisal City Corporation (BCC) announced over Tk 2.75 billion budget without imposing new taxes for current fiscal year against Tk 694.72 million revised and Tk 2.36 billion proposed budget of the last fiscal year.

The announcement was made at the Nagar Bhaban conference hall in Barisal Thursday. Mayor in charge and ward councilor of the corporation Awlad Hossain Dilu announced the proposed budget while ward councilors, officials and newsmen were present on the occasion.

The corporation has announced 85 per cent grant and aid dependent high ambitious budget for the current fiscal year.

The mayor said: "The corporation will be able to earn Tk 327.7 million as revenue if the city dwellers pay their holding tax and other taxes regularly."

Awlad Hossain Dilu said the normal functions of the corporation had been hampered due to the absence of Mayor and huge amounts of grants had to be returned back. Preparation of the proposed budget was also delayed.

The Mayor emphasised on giving citizens basic services including development of roads and slums, free birth registration, immunisations, water supply, health, sanitation, drainage and sewerage and beautification of the city.

Major heads of the development budget of the corporation included Tk 400 million for development of infrastructure of the corporation, Tk 250 million for part construction of surface water treatment plant, pump houses and water supply development, Tk 225 million for implementation of development programmes under different government and non-government sectors, Tk 220 million for road development and construction, Tk 205.1 million flood rehabilitation project Tk 185.2 million for rehabilitation of cyclone Sidr affected infrastructures, Tk 120 million for construction of truck terminal and Tk 110 million for construction of new graveyard.
