The government will not allow any vested group's attempts to destroy the potential and flourishing shipbuilding industry in the name of protecting environment, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Tuesday. "We will not allow any conspiracy by any vested group to stunt the growth and development of the potential shipbuilding and ship-breaking industries in the name of environment," he said. The government is determined to build environment-friendly shipbuilding and ship-breaking industries in the country, the minister said, adding it would not promote any sector that threatens environment and the public health. Mr Barua was speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on "Identifying Regulatory Barriers: Improving Transparency in Ship Building Industry and Ensuring Accelerated Growth" in the city. International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) organised the workshop with its president Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury in the chair. The government has offered a number of facilities in the national budget for entrepreneurs of the shipbuilding industry, making the way for investment of undisclosed money in this flourishing sector, the minister said, adding "More logical support will be given for the entrepreneurs in the next budget to ensure effective growth of the sector." "A new industrial partnership between Bangladesh and Germany has been developed through sharing of technology and knowledge," Holger Michael, ambassador of Germany in Bangladesh, said. He expressed the hope that the flourishing shipbuilding industry would be transformed into an economic powerhouse of the country in future. "Pangaon Inland Container Terminar will start its operation by the end of this year," Abdul Mannan Howlader, secretary of Ministry of Shipping, said adding the government is providing necessary support to this sector for its further growth. "Our flourishing shipbuilding industry needs such a policy framework that will be executed by technically competent persons having clear understanding of the industry for ensuring its faster and hassle-free growth," Suhel Chowdhury, former secretary of Ministry of Shipping, said while presenting his keynote paper.
