FE Report
British American Tobacco Bangladesh has launched 5 water treatment plants simultaneously in Kushtia, Jhenidah, Meherpur and Manikganj districts marking World Water Day Tuesday. BAT Bangladesh's new initiative is to provide communities with safe drinking water free from arsenic and other impurity in arsenic prone areas, prompting the Company to launch this sustainable, community-based initiative PROBAHO, Bangla for 'flow'. As a part of PROBAHO, the safe drinking water initiative, BAT Bangladesh has so far installed 18 filtration plants, including the 5 new plants, to make water free from arsenic and other harmful contents. The PROBAHO plants are located in Kushtia, Jhenidah, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Satkhira, Tangail and Manikganj districts. All the 18 plants are providing approximately 95,000 litres of pure water that can meet the demand of around 47,000 people in one day. World Water Day is observed on March 22 to promote clean water after the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as World Day for Water. Observance of this day began in 1993 and has grown significantly ever since. The UN and its member nations devote this day to implement and promote concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources. Deputy Commissioner of Jhenidah Rama Rani Roy inaugurated the plant at Berbari village in Shailakupa, Jhenidah. Shailkupa Upazila Chairman Nayeb Ali Zoarder was also present at the inauguration. Deputy Commissioner of Meherpur Benjamin Hembrom opened the plant at Vomordah village in Gangni, Meherpur while Deputy Commissioner of Kushtia Abdul Mannan inaugurated the plant at Jaudia village in Daulatpur, Kushtia. Superintendent of Police Md. Ekramul Habib inaugurated the plant at Ahamedpur village in Sadar Upazila, Kushtia. BAT Bangladesh has taken this initiative to help communities where it operates by providing them with safe drinking water to complement development efforts made by the Government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Water and sanitation are critical factors to achieve the MDGs by 2015. BAT Bangladesh has launched PROBAHO using SIDKO Water Filtration Unit, which is a government approved community based technology. BAT Bangladesh's other CSR initiatives are flagship Afforestation programme and support for sustainable agriculture, which includes Green Manuring through Dhoincha, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) clubs and Farmers' Field School Programme.
