BAT launches afforestation programme

British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) Tuesday launched its annual afforestation programme styled 'Sapling Distribution 2008' aiming to protect the country from natural disasters and to join the Government's national drive of tree plantation.

BATB's programme is the largest afforestation drive by any private sector entity in the country.

A H M Rezaul Kabir, secretary of Ministry of Environment and Forests, inaugurated the sapling distribution programme at the Krishibid Uddyan in city's Agargaon.

The Secretary praised BAT Bangladesh's contribution for the countrywide afforestation campaign for almost three decades now. He also reiterated the need for 'afforestation to protect the country from natural disasters and mentioned that this programme complements the Government's national drive of tree plantation.

Golam Mainuddin, deputy managing director of BAT Bangladesh detailed out this year's plan to distribute 4.2 million saplings across the country. He further said, "We have been carrying out the nationwide afforestation program since 1980 and so far we have distributed more than 55 million saplings.

He also mentioned, "Ours is the largest afforestation drive by any private sector entity in Bangladesh".
