BAT launches water plant in Kurigram

A safe drinking water plant of British American Tobacco Bangladesh was launched Wednesday at Ulipur in Kurigram district. BAT Bangladesh's new initiative is to provide communities with safe drinking water in arsenic prone areas, prompting the Company to launch PROBAHO, Bangla for flow. A. K. M. Mayeedul Islam, Member of Parliament, formally inaugurated the plant. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Islam lauded BAT Bangladesh's role in providing local community with safe drinking water. BAT Bangladesh's Communication and CSR Manager Shamim Zahedy, Leaf Corporate Manager Akhter A. Khan and Regional Leaf Manager Velayet Ali Ahsan were also present. As a part of PROBAHO, the safe drinking water initiative, BAT Bangladesh has so far installed 18 filtration plants to make water free from arsenic and other harmful contents. The other PROBAHO plants are located in Kushtia, Manikganj, Satkhira, Meherpur, Jhenidah, Tangail, and Chuadanga districts. All the 18 plants are providing approximately 95,000 litres of pure water that can meet the demand of around 47,000 people in one day. BAT Bangladesh has taken this initiative to help the community where it operates by providing them with safe drinking water to complement development efforts made by the Government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Water and sanitation is a critical factor to achieve the MDGs by 2015. BAT Bangladesh has launched PROBAHO using SIDKO Water Filtration Unit, which is a government approved community based technology. BAT Bangladesh's other CSR initiatives are flagship Afforestation programme and support for sustainable agriculture, which includes Green Manuring, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) clubs and Farmer Field School Programme.
