Bata starts marketing of Nike shoes

Bata Shoe company Limited Wednesday started marketing the renowned Nike shoes and sportswear across the country to provide the consumers with a variety of sports and lifestyle wears.

Jorge Carbajal, managing director of Bata Emerging Markets (West) and J.D. Hearns, managing director of Bata Shoe Company (BD) Ltd. launched the latest Nike products through a press conference in a city hotel.

"Initially, Bata will introduce the latest range of running, soccer, tennis, basketball and sports shoes from Nike which would be available in five of its top outlets located in Gulshan-1, Banani, Rapa Plaza, Bashundhara City and Elephant Road," said M.A Quader, marketing manager of the company.

"There is a growing demand for high-end footwear and sport shoes among a fast-growing upper class of the society. Our target is to grab the market with the world's best footwear brand, Nike," he said.

"There is a craze for Nike footwear among university students, athletes and joggers. They are willing to pay good price so long they get the genuine Nike products," Qader said

Bata, for the first time brought nine designs with 545 pair Nike shoes, he said adding the price would start from Tk 5000 to Tk 8500 a pair.

Bangladesh's footwear market is relatively small compared to its large population. It was worth over Tk 18 billion last year.

But industry insiders said the market has been growing over 20 per cent annually in the recent years, with branded shoes among the fastest growing segments.

Bata has over 238 retail outlets across the country and hundreds of registered wholesale dealers and licensee shops. Last year, it sold over 30 million pairs of shoes with a turnover of over Tk 4.69 billion.

Bata shoe Ltd has already brought well renowned international brands such as Hush Puppies and Scholl while, at the same time upholding the image of its own specialised brands of modern designs and marketing them through different retail concepts.
