Baukul cultivators making good profit in Rangpur district

RANGPUR, Feb 5: A good number of farmers at different upazilas in Rangpur district are getting financially solvent through cultivation of Baukul, a kind of plum in recent years.
According to sources the cultivation of the plum on the rise in the region as the growers are earning handsome profit by cultivating the delicious fruit on their lands. Due to huge profit and easy cultivation process many farmers in the district are showing their interest in its cultivation, sources further said
This season the growers witnessed an excellent yield of the fruit. Its harvesting is also going on in full swing across the region. The growers are delighted to achieve a bumper production of their produce.
Khalil Mia, a Baukul grower of Projapara village in Pirganj Upazila told The Financial Express that he has been cultivating Baukul commercially for the last three years and earning good profit. He has cultivated it on one acre of his land and is earning more profit than other crops. Cultivation of kul (plum) is easier than other crops, he added. Witnessing his success many farmers of his area are showing their interest in its cultivation, he added.
Hasanur Rahman, a Baukul cultivator of Jumakhanpara village under Ranipukur union at Mithapukur upazila told FE that he has cultivated it on 40 decimals of his land and he has already earned Tk1,00000 by selling his produce.
A number of Baukul growers said the cultivation of the fruit is more profitable than the cultivation of crops like paddy, potato, maize etc. They could get rid of the curse of poverty by cultivating it in their lands on a large scale, they also said. Due to ongoing countrywide blockade and shutdown the growers are being deprived of more profit, they added.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources being a lucrative fruit item the cultivation of different varieties of kul ( plum) including Baukul is getting popular in many areas of Rangpur and its adjacent districts.
The DAE officials also advised the farmers to cultivate it as the cultivation of the fruit is lucrative and its production cost is less than other crops. DAE is also helping the growers by providing them with quality saplings and latest technology to boost up its cultivation, sources added.
