
Baul king Shah Abdul Karim passes away

SYLHET, Sept 12 (bdnews24.com): 'Baul Samrat' Shah Abdul Karim died Saturday at the age of 93.
The legendary bard and singer, with more than a thousand folk songs to his name, passed away at a Sylhet clinic at 7:58am, doctors said.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep sadness at the death. "His passing away is an irreparable loss for Bangali culture," she said in a condolence message.
Karim, loved and known for baul songs such as Gari Cholena Cholena , was born at Ujandhol village on the bank of the Kalni in Sunamganj on Feb 15, 1916.
He was awarded the Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian honours in Bangladesh, in 2001.
Karim wrote and composed over 1,500 songs, which have been published in six volumes.
Thousands of admirers and fellow musicians gathered at the Sunamganj village home of the legendary musician 'Baul Samrat' Shah Abdul Karim.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, in a book on Karim, said the musician had been very much a part of contemporary worldly events too, notwithstanding his intense spirituality.
Much of Karim's vast catalogue of over 1,500 songs is available in a collection of six volumes.
