BB bringing more people under banking network

Bangladesh Bank (BB) is trying to add an impetus to the country's economic development by bringing more people under the banking network, speakers said at a discussion in the city Monday.
"For last couple of years BB is emphasising increased access to finance for the rural poor", BB governor Atiur Rahman said. He mentioned the opening of nine million bank accounts for the farmers with State-owned Commercial Banks (SCBs) and other specialised banks.
Bangladesh Bank and Asia Pacific Regional Agricultural Association (APRACA) jointly organised 'APRACA FinPower National Forum' in CIRDAP auditorium.
The day-long forum, titled 'Rural and Microfinance Policy Environment and Regulatory Framework', was inaugurated by deputy governor of BB Murshid Kuli Khan.
Murshid Kuli chaired the forum and conveyed the written speech of Atiur as he could not attend.
"We've disbursed Tk 111.16 billion (US$ 1.5 billion) in last fiscal year which is highest in country's history and aiming to distribute Tk 126 billion as agri/rural credit", Atiur said.
