BB concerned over incidents of bank heists

FE Report | Tuesday, 28 January 2014

The central bank expressed Monday its concern over the growing incidents of cash looting from bank vaults in recent times and directed the commercial banks to beef up security measures in this respect.
In a circular, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) said its instructions regarding maintenance of security at the vaults are not properly followed by many banks, causing such incidents.
The central bank, however, asked the banks concerned to comply with three security measures -- structural, technological and insurance to prevent such incidents in future.
Among the steps, the banks have been advised to install security door and steel wall for the sound protection of the vault. The security measures will have to be certified by civil engineers.
It also directed the banks for setting up close circuit cameras and security alarm system round the clock inside the vault and the system will have to be uninterruptedly linked with the central information system of the bank.
It finally instructed the banks for ensuring full insurance coverage of the cash kept inside the vault.
The BB issued the circular a day after the sensational dacoity at the Kishoreganj district branch of Sonali Bank Limited (SBL), in which unknown miscreants looted Tk 164 million from its vault by digging a tunnel to the vault from a nearby building only 20 yards away from the bank.
