FE REPORT | Wednesday, 1 January 2025
The Bangladesh Bank has relaxed the $10,000 limit on foreign currencies spent on overseas medical care for those injured in last year's mass uprising.
Issuing a circular, the central bank's Foreign Exchange Policy Department (FEPD) on Tuesday said it has been decided that the limit of $10,000 or its equivalent amount will remain relaxed for overseas treatment of the persons injured in the July 2024 student-people uprising.
Talking to The Financial Express, FEPD Director Md Harun-Ar-Rashid said travellers could carry a maximum of $10,000 abroad for treatment without permission under the existing guidelines.
With the latest circular, he said, the central bank had relaxed the ceiling considering overseas treatment of the injured victims of the uprising. "Now, they can take with them foreign currencies equivalent to over $10,000, if necessary."
In this context, the circular said banks' authorised dealer (AD) branches may release foreign exchange based on estimations. In addition to banking channels, international cards may be used for such transactions.
