Organisations should come up with long-term corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans to invest in productive sectors like education and health, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Thursday.
"The firms' CSR activities are confined to relief work in catastrophes like flood or cyclone but now they have changed their mindsets and diversified their activities," he said at the Mutual Trust Bank-Dhaka University Alumni Association (MTB-DUAA) scholarship awards ceremony on the campus.
"Banks are coming forward in this regard," he said.
The central bank governor said if the DUAA wants to create a fund for disabled students, the BB will provide all out support, he added.
Thirty-four students of Dhaka University received scholarships.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said the students will be encouraged to study hard, if they get scholarships during their study period.
"There is no alternative to country's progress without educating the new generation," he added.
He thanked the MTB and urged other organisations to follow suit.
President of DUAA Syed Manzur Elahi said the government should consider tax deduction on CSR spending.
"If the CSR amount is tax deductible, then many will feel encouraged to invest in such activities," he said.
The alumni, the main source of donation to the university, should help improve departmental labs, library or research facilities in the highest seat of learning in the country, he added.
Chairman of MTB Samson H Chowdhury said knowledge is power and for gaining knowledge, education is a pre-requisite.
He said he would do whatever possible to help the disabled.
Managing director of MTB Anis A Khan said only meritorious students can study in Dhaka University.
"The MTB is glad to associate itself with the scholarship programme," he said.
