BB Governor puts thrust on developing human capital

3,986 students get Dutch-Bangla Bank awards

Dutch-Bangla Bank Saturday awarded scholarship to 3,986 students who passed HSC or equivalent examination in 2018 and studying at graduation level in different universities and colleges.
The ceremony was held at Shaheed Surhawardy Indoor Stadium in the city.
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq was present as the chief guest at the function while the Bangladesh Bank governor Fazle Kabir was present as special guest.
They handed over the scholarship awarding letters among the recipients.
Dutch-Bangla Bank, under its social cause program, has been awarding scholarship to the meritorious students in need of financial aid studying at higher secondary and graduation levels.
Under this initiative, a total number of 57,696 students got DBBL scholarship among which 18,500 students at different levels are receiving the scholarship at present.
Minister Anisul Huq, in his speech, lauded the scholarship program of Dutch-Bangla Bank and recalled other philanthropic activities of the bank.
He appreciated the DBBL's continuous humanitarian and welfare activities and termed this scholarship program as a unique example of helping the meritorious and needy students of the country.
He expected that all the corporate bodies of the country would come forward with such programs for the benefit of the society.
Governor Fazle Kabir said there is no other way but developing human capital of the country to reach developing and gradually developed status.
"And development of education is the only to develop human capital."
"The country spends 12 per cent of its annual budget on education. Still, the government can't alone provide quality education. Individuals and private sectors need to contribute."
Lauding the bank, he said Dutch-Bangla is spending more than 30 per cent mandated CSR (corporate social responsibility) fund on education.
The country's banks spent Tk550 million CSR in 2009 while the amount reached to Tk 7.4 billion in 2017 growing13 per cent.
"Banks spent Tk 2.7 billion on education in first six months from CSR fund," he added.
DBBL Chairman Sayem Ahmed said that Dutch- Bangla Bank started this scholarship when it noticed that there are a lot of students who did not get fair chance, despite showing academic talent, for economic, demographic and societal reasons;
"They are not lacking in merit, but lack of the resources to use their merit," he added.
Managing Director and CEO of DBBL Abul Kashem Md. Shirin offered vote of thanks at the function.
